Walking up to the Brecon Cathedral, it’s hard to not be in awe as the stone walls slowly spiral up an old road and to the front of this beautiful building. It was lucky, perhaps, that I came on a day with such gorgeous weather, but I couldn’t be happier with how my visit went.

As I walked inside, I was hit with the beautiful sound of the Lunchtime Concerts as Dr Carwyn Tywyn, that day’s musician, played folk harp music to his heart’s content. It was a perfect start to an even better visit. Whether he spoke in English or Welsh, and played songs I could not understand – it was mesmerising. The high ceilings created echoes that bounced in and out, making it really the best spot to play such enchanting music.

The concert was over far too soon, but I went to talk to a volunteer, who led me around the Cathedral, explaining to me the history of the place. What I learned is far too much to have in just one review, it’s enough for about ten.

The history of The Brecon Cathedral is rich and varied, from ancient Norman culture to the battle-filled history of the 24th Welsh Regiment. And there’s a little bit of something for everyone, whether you be a history nerd or a music enthusiast. The artwork is all stunning, and if I had it my way, I could spend days just looking and learning about the history of this beautiful cathedral.

What makes it even better is the beautiful surroundings, vibrant green and ancient stone. The outer area has a lovely sitting place where you can spend your afternoon reading or dozing in the sunshine while just taking in the history simmering around you.

Beautiful artwork, riveting history, and architecture older than time. You really can’t go wrong with a visit to Brecon Cathedral, and I would recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat.
